    FOUR MONTH “HIATUS?”

    talkback

Part of a full page ad in today’s Sunday News

Lancaster Newspapers realizes thousands of well meaning TalkBack readers and posters will be disappointed by this action. The success TalkBack enjoyed over the past ten years was directly due to their willingness to share their opinions with us and, in turn, became an important extension of our news reporting activities. TalkBack will be missed.

Part of the message from LNP when you click on the “Talkback” tab.  Click here to comment on LancTalk.com.

LIP News is on vacation until Tuesday, September 7 when “FORUM WARS!” will continue.  Comments will remain open.  Have a great holiday!

    IT’S ABOUT THE MONEY!

Robert Field of NewsLanc usually keeps my head shaking in bewilderment but his absolute failure to understand the motive behind LNP bringing back the Trashback forum is astounding!  No, they aren’t doing it for the community out of the goodness of their hearts, Robert!  Oh, my God!

I have this comment awaiting moderation on his site under, “Welcome back LancasterOnline’s ‘Talkback,’” (click here).  Let’s see if he approves it:

Although undoubtedly time consuming and vexing for the Lancaster Newspapers, Inc., the re-introduction of LancasterOnLine’s “Talk Back” is an important contribution to the community.”

Robert, this is about money!!!  $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$  Money!!!

In the meantime, over at LancTalk.com they have worked very hard and set up a wonderful replacement forum. A lot of your “friends” are on that forum, Robert! Maybe you should rethink this whole thing. LNP did a very foolish thing by yanking the forum down suddenly because their moderators didn’t have a clue as to what is acceptable. Now they realize they’ve lost at least 10% of their traffic and thus $$$$$$$$$$$$$ by taking it down. I don’t wish them any luck at all.

    AUTHENTIC WINNERS!

Okay, folks, the winners of the “Find An Unauthentic City” contest are:

    1.  Legal Eagle:

Or maybe Lancaster can buy the body of a famous dead person and name it after him/her like Jim Thorpe, Pa did.

Okay – so it wasn’t an official entry and it’s a town not a city – breaking Rule 1.  But I don’t care because Legal happened to pick up on one of the great mysteries in life.  Why, oh why, would a town do this?  So I looked it up and the town used to be named Mauch Chunk, Lenape Indian for “bear mountain” (click here).  Everything about this town including its name is unauthentic.  Winner!

    2.  Mitch

“Fake City” (click here).  Enough said.

    3.   Daisy Lee Myers

“Although Aventura, FL functions as a separate city, incorporated in 1995, it is still served by Miami-Dade Fire and rescue, and the official addresses in Aventura are still Miami addresses,” (click here).

    Honorable Mentions:

    Chem Trail Air

I nominate Wawa, Pennsylvania.  You head to Wawa, PA thinking that you’ll get a loaf of bread and Vitamin water… and discover it’s a town, not a convenience store.

Okay, another town, but once again Chem has picked up on a great mystery.  The only thing that exists in Wawa, PA that I’ve ever seen is the headquarters of – you guessed it – the double Wa!  Why isn’t there a Wawa there?  How did this even qualify to become a town?

    galty

Vatican CITY is not authentic as it is a state!

Thank you to all who entered and I hope there are no sore losers!  I made the rule and therefore, I get to break it when an authentic  unauthentic entry cannot be denied!

What did these intelligent, wonderful people win?   I’m working on the prizes.  They will be announced at a later date.

Butts Arrested in Boob Murder Case

This is a “real” headline, folks!  Thanks to Facebook, I discovered this unbelievable gem (click here).  What are the odds of getting a “Butts” and a “Boob” involved in the same murder?  As a commenter said, “Journalistic Gold!  This is a career piece!”  Yes, it’s one for the resume and whoever wrote the headline should be given a bottle of champagne and a hefty raise immediately!

Lancaster’s “A City Authentic” campaign got off to a rousing start last week — if you like train wrecks.

Not long after the “Big Reveal” in front of 70 guests at the former Pennsylvania Academy of Music building, Mayor Rick Gray and his minions were deflecting criticism that the campaign, which cost taxpayers $12,000, really isn’t as authentic as advertised.

The start of today’s New Era editorial, “An authentic city, indeed.”

Okay, so who got paid $12,000 and what did they do to earn it?

Well, we aren’t going to learn that from Shelley Castetter, who in another lengthy post on the LancTalk forum titled, “The Beginning is the End,” says this (click here):

I am already working on another story and will not be continuing this one.

That’s the way to clean up the city, Shelley!  That’s the way to stay on them and hold them accountable!  NOT!  And before you add these two stories to your resume, please have someone rewrite them, edit out a least half the copy and cut out your whining about not being “credited” by LNP.

Well, I wish I could tell you I had a butts and boob story coming this afternoon – but I have something even better – the winners of the “Find An Unauthentic City” contest!  Okay, so it’s not better but those stories only come once or twice in a life time!  Sigh!  It does get a reporter’s blood racing though!  Mirinda Boob!  LOL!

    BAGGAGE

People are curious to how this young 18 year old died, that was dating a very Lancaster famous name. No one knew it was suicide until it was posted here. You were the one who came on here and immediately began attacking those that were just curious as to how an 18 year old dies (without being in a car accident or overdose) and just happens to be the girlfriend of a boy who’s father was convicted of killing his mother, after getting caught having an affair and fathering a child to the mistress. If accounts are right, Sam had and will always have a lot of baggage and years of therapy ahead of him for his fathers actions.

Part of a comment into this site.

I hope that Sam and everyone involved in this latest tragedy seek intensive counseling.

I will not divulge the details of my telephone conversation yesterday.  I have no way of verifying the two women’s identities.  It did not end well – but that is to be expected.

I am glad that Amber had a beautiful life but saddened that she chose to end it.  My condolences to her family and friends.

On a much lighter note – sort of - and to address some of those who said Amber’s death was not “news” – there is this story in today’s paper, “Charges pile up for Denver man,” (click here). Robert Ewell most certainly did not have a good day yesterday!  I know nothing about this man but I am absolutely certain he wishes he had not been drunk by noon and that his name and story were not featured in the “news.”

To my friends in Denver, PA – have you considered moving?

    AUTOPSY PERFORMED

I just spoke with Sgt. Larry Martin of the East Cocalico Township Police Department.  He said their department did respond to the death of 18-year-old Amber Weiler last Friday in Denver.  He stated the coroner performed an autopsy.  He directed all other questions to the coroner’s office and I have a call in to Lancaster County Coroner Steve Diamantoni.

    ANOTHER DEATH IN DENVER

Why are we making this into a news story? Don’t you think the family has enough to worry about?

This is not news, he didn’t kill her or anything, jeez.

Leave the family grieve for the young girl.

This comment just in under “BREAKING NEWS” below.

I’ve been waiting for a comment like this all day – so let me say a few things about this:

    1.  When a healthy 18-year-old dies unexpectedly, it very often is in the news and it should be.  The police have to investigate which means it’s in the police log which the Lancaster Newspapers check on a regular basis. Why wasn’t this death in the news?  What was the cause of her death?

    2.  Her slightly “unusual” obituary states that Sam Roseboro was her boyfriend.  The obituary was in the Lancaster Newspapers and online for the whole world to read.

    3.  Sam Roseboro is the son of Michael and Jan Roseboro.  Michael was convicted of first degree murder for killing Jan.  Sam Roseboro testified for the defense in his trial.  The murder and subsequent trial made LNP’s “Top Ten Stories of the Decade” and crime author M. William Phelps is writing a book about the case.

    4.  Michael Roseboro was the co-owner of the Roseboro Funeral Home at the time.  It has since been purchased by the Stradling family and it is now named the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home.  They are handling the funeral of Amber Nicole Weiler.

    5.  Does all of this make her death newsworthy?  Yes, I’m sorry but it absolutely does.  My condolences to her family.

There will be more on this tomorrow.  And please see the comments under “A WEEK OF UPDATES” below where Daisy has provided updates on the very strange case of missing LGH nurse Toni Lee Sharpless.  Thanks, Daisy!

    STALKER WARNING

There are two new permanent links on this site (over to the right immediately under the archives):  Stalker Warning (click here) and Stalker Warning 2 (click here).  I own the second blogspot and it will be updated substantially this weekend.

In September, LIP News will mark six years of publishing almost daily.  I am extremely proud of that, and what began with an email to about 15 Trashbackers has grown to a site that often draws in excess of 1,000 visitors a day.

The wonderful friend who developed this current WordPress site did not turn the comments option on.  He warned me about conservative Lancaster and a flood of harsh, cruel and out-of-line comments.  It has never happened.  About 95% of all comments are published exactly the way they come in.  I think that’s phenomenal and I appreciate it so much.

There are, of course, crazies, stalkers, harassers and very sick individuals on the internet.  Two have chosen to target this site and the people I write about and my friends and I won’t tolerate it.  Keep it up, boys, and you’ll learn quite quickly that you have chosen the wrong woman to mess with.

Thank you everyone else for your patience today.  Be careful on the internets, please!

    THE FIFTH FREEDOM?

Dear Becky - I have been following your page since the McQuilkin story first surfaced. I dug around a little deeper today when you referenced “the incest story.” My gosh, I am so sorry. You have been through so much and I feel a great deal of compassion and sorrow for you. I wonder how common this is among Quakers. I mean, I know incest can happen anywhere and to anyone, but, I wonder how prevalent it is in the Quaker community.

We have been sending my son to a Quaker school and by no means am I implying that he has encountered any kind of sexual abuse there. But there definitely appears to be some kind of sub culture or an “elite” group of insiders who seem to control the school and the school’s thought processes. I am concerned that there is a definitive feeling of exclusivity among some families there and for those of us who don’t fit in, it makes for some very uncomfortable times.

Based on some of the stories I read, I am really wondering if this code of silence applies to all aspects of a Quaker’s life. Or, am I just being paranoid???

Please don’t feel that you have to publish this - I would love to get your input, though.

    Thanks

    Nona

    This comment in today.

Thank you for writing.  I have very strong feelings regarding some of your questions and I will answer them all tomorrow morning in more detail but:

    1.  When I was growing up it was extremely prevalent in the Lancaster Friends Meeting (Quakers).

    2.  I would never send or advise anyone to send their children to a Quaker School.

    3.  Quakers absolutely have an air of feeling superior in general and specifically superior to every other religion – of course, the second item may be true of all religions.

    4.  I have found that the code of silence often applies to all aspects of Quaker’s lives – and that is never a good thing.

In the love story I linked to yesterday (click here), Paul and I meet at a Quaker camp – the Farm & Wilderness Camp in Plymouth, Vermont.  I allude to the “fifth freedom.”  The fifth freedom is the “option” of wearing swimming suits or swimming naked.  Everyone, yes, that is correct, everyone swam naked when Paul and I were there – including the teenage co-ed camp.

I’ll have more to say about that tomorrow.  And, no, neither Paul nor I had any idea when we showed up that summer, even though my sister had been a counselor there for several summers and knew full well about the “fifth freedom.”

    SHARE OUR HAPPINESS

This has been an interesting weekend – and no,  I’m not telling why.  But several days ago, I posted my Facebook status as:

Oh, no! Bob Green and Bob Mitchell will be breaking news in tomorrow’s LIP News! Who knew? Am I desperate for readers or what? Lol

I print their full names because how many Bob’s with their last names are there in this country?  Tons!

These are two of my best friends from my college days and the fact they found me and requested to be my friend on Facebook is one of the nicest things that has happened to me recently.  They are just such decent, funny and wonderful guys.

So what’s the story I was going to tell?  With everything that has happened in my life recently, it takes me back to my college boyfriend, Paul, and the memories of him that came back to me and also begin the incest story (click here).

And I wonder if they remember this:  I believe it was our senior year at Hartwick College and I was back together with Paul.  He was so excited and wanted to tell everyone we knew we were in love again.

Mitchell and Green were living together in an apartment off campus and we went there.  Paul knocked on their door and both of them came.  Paul said, “I just wanted you to know that Becky and I are back together and love each other.  We’re so happy and we just wanted you to know and share in our happiness.”

They both looked surprised and didn’t know what to say.  “That’s nice,” one finally said.

At a mini reunion many years later, Green asked me whatever happened to that guy I dated in college.  “You guys were good together,” he said.

More of “CHARLIES PROMISE” will be coming soon but it’s back to the news tomorrow.

    FELONY ASSAULTS

“Police Office Todd Grager has not given a legitimate reason why Johnson allegedly pushed him and tried to punch him.”

What?! If Officer Granger had pushed and punched a teenaged city maintenance worker, you would have demanded that the officer explain his actions. In this case, however, Granger is the one who was pushed and punched, so…. you demand that the policeman explain the actions of the guy who assaulted him?

Regardless of what interaction took place between the two men, I’m fairly certain that if I had been in Johnson’s place, I would not have ended up pushing and punching a uniformed cop (or anyone else, for that matter).

This comment just in under “FOR GOD’S SAKE?” below.

Actually, Grager did not say he was punched but said Johnson “tried” to punch him and Johnson is charged with felony aggravated assault.  I’ll come back to this tomorrow.

    REPRESENTED

In other news, according to their dockets, both Troy Stewart and Lauren Reed now have attorneys.  Both were charged with felony Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse charges surrounding the death of Scott McQuilkin in  Reinholds on July 17.

Stewart, who is out of prison on bail, has private attorney Alan Gary Goldberg of the law firm Goldberg & Beyer in Lancaster representing him and Reed is represented by Public Defender Douglas Conrad. Their preliminary hearing on the charges is scheduled for September 2 at 9:30 a.m. in District Judge Nancy Hamill’s office.

        Will these two remain friends?

LIP News will publish tomorrow morning but not in the afternoon.

    MOVING FORWARD

Becky, I have a friend whose father turned their back on him in every way imaginable. Yet, when his father died it was a very traumatic experience despite his dad’s behavior his whole life. My friend wished that he had fought a little harder and been more confrontational with his dad about what he was like. He did try on numerous times to do just that but his dad just waved him off and wouldn’t even talk about what his son needed to talk about.

After his dad died, he knew that that door was shut forever. His sisters and brothers had a very different life with the father and that just added more fuel to the fire when he didn’t show up. He knew if he did show up that they would just have it out and his sisters and brothers trying to tell him that he was wrong. But he wasn’t wrong about how his dad treated him. He wanted to be the better person and go to the funeral. But he couldn’t because it would have just been drama all around. So he held his own small funeral ceremony for his dad; a memorial service where he could talk to his friends about the reality of his dad and yet how he did love him despite it all. His friends knew and some had seen first hand how his dad treated him. There were no arguments and there was sincere sympathy exhibited. It was a good way for my friend to move forward. Sometimes your true family turns out to be your true friends.

    This comment in.

Thank you very much.  I needed that.  This afternoon – back to the news.

  • A LARGE IRISH DRUMSTICK - 2

Posted on July 29th, 2010 Becky 5 comments

    NOT FUNNY AT ALL!

    irish-drumstick

I appreciate your site being so informative in regards to the Scott McQuilkin case, but I’m not sure I understand your most recent post on the LIP blog? I find ”Large Irish Drumstick” as a headline to be offensive to the memory of Scott! Scott was a great friend to a lot of people that fell on some very hard times. Scott did not deserve what happened to him. No person or animal for that fact deserves that!  Is this what is on Troy Stewart Facebook Page? If he is bragging about what he did on Facebook I think you need to explain that so you are not perpetuating the evil acts that were done. I hope he goes to Jail for a long time and I hope the DA can up the charges. What they did to Scott while he lay there dying is sick and incomprehensible. I think the DA could and should be looking into more serious charges. How does the DA know they didn’t give him something to keep him unconscious while they desecrated his body?  How do you know that Lauren Reed didn’t set him up? I’m sure she does not “think it is funny” now.

    This email in this morning.

I used the headline, “Large Irish Drumstick” because that is how the Lancaster Newspapers quoted it as being described in the criminal complaint.  I had never heard of an “Irish Drumstick” before and I’m still confused as to exactly what it is and why anyone but a drummer would have one.

A friend found this website about an actual Irish drum maker and the picture of the drumstick is at the bottom of the page.

Who owned it and why?  Why in the world would two people think it was funny to put one up someone’s rectum?  Someone they claim was passed out and unconscious at the time.

Could this have caused his death?  What will the toxicology reports reveal?  Were Stewart and Reed taking drugs that night?  I have been told they were.

[Editor’s Note – This email had the subject ‘WHAT?” and went to my spam folder.  I almost didn’t open it - and probably shouldn’t have!   Please indicate LIP News or some other reference to this site in your subject line if I will not recognize your email address.  Thank you.]

Michael Texter was a frequent visitor at Michael Roseboro’s home.  On the night Jan was murdered, Texter was with Mike and Jan’s son, Samuel Roseboro.  From the Affadavit of Probable Cause:

Texter provided a complete alibi for and confirmed that Samuel Roseboro was not at home at the time of the murder.

The latest murder happened at a home 100 feet from the Roseboro home and is owned by a family named Texter.  I am told that “Texter” is a common name in the Denver/Reinholds area.  Is there a connection?
