***  It’s been quite a day at the Lancaster Newspapers!  A front-page apology for a racist cartoon and the announcement of a huge change in their editorial page and an Open Letter from the NAACP on their new editorial page.  Thank you NAACP for (finally) loudly and firmly  stepping up and demanding an apology and change!
I have personal commitments this afternoon, but will come back to all of this tomorrow!  Wow!  How much change will there really be?
Just a reminder from this morning that the link to donate to Annika Horn, Sunday’s stabbing victim, is here.

** James Burchik, the nasty, racist New Era Editorial Page editor, has apparently been fired or taken retirement.  His name and picture have been deleted from LNP’s employee directory.  Click here for LNP’s apology for Burchik’s decision last Saturday.  Unbelievable!

Annika Horn

Annika Horn is a beautiful soul and has been a wonderful, faithful friend for the entirety of my adult life. She was assaulted in her own home on Saturday, September 6th, nearly mortally wounded and is currently in intensive care in an undisclosed location. She has undergone several surgeries to repair the terrible damage done to her body, and will require much more specialized medical care in the months and weeks to come.

  1. huh? says:

I wonder if Lancaster’s branch of the NAACP is either historically fearful of what has been done to minorities there before rather than being a political non-entity in the city.

This would be such a powerful moment for the NAACP to publicly point out everything that is wrong about the LNP.

    • Becky says:

Huh? – LNP is having a live chat on their website this Monday at 10:00 am with the big folks according to today’s paper. Everyone should be made aware of it and contribute!!!

      • Becky says:

From the editorial page of today’s paper:

We want to hear from you. This week, we revamped our editorial page. We moved to independent editorial pages aimed at taking on local issues with strong voices and diverse perspectives.
In a departure from a long tradition, we decided to no longer offer distinct Intelligencer Journal and Lancaster New Era editorial pages.
Please join us at 10 a.m. Monday on LancasterOnline.com for a live chat to discuss the editorial page change.
Lancaster Newspapers President John Kirkpatrick, Executive Editor Barbara Hough Roda and Editorial Page Editor Suzanne Cassidy will be available to answer questions and to talk about the changes.

galty. I hope you’re right, but I’ll believe it when it happens.

  3. galty says:

Frank… hope this result of a racist being “Fired” from LNP puts some fire in NAACP belly and others on the paper.

Its so defeatist to say this will blow over.

Old English term “You’ve got um by the bollocks my old son”

  4. Frank Lee says:

This will all blow over. The Lancaster chapter of the NAACP is fairly useless and silent. Other than a few sound bites from Rita Smith Wade-El during Black History Month, you’d never know they existed.

  5. Rednek says:

Regarding LNP’s apology….I think actions speak louder than words; and while LNP is very good in the word department, they need to be sure that their actions follow suit. This means they need to immediately begin including more diversity in their management and editorial staff, as well as their reporter staff. If LNP truly wants to reflect the opinions of a diverse community, then LNP needs to put their money where their mouth is, in terms of providing it’s readers and advertisers with a diverse staff to reflect that commitment.

Any thing less in just words on paper, and we all know how meaningless that can be. It’s not worth the paper it’s printed on.

  6. my goodness says:

Becky, thank you for sharing information regarding Annika. As for Burchik, long, long overdue. How pathetic that it took this horrible editorial to FINALLY open LNP’s eyes and do something about him.

  7. huh? says:

So who is this Cassidy woman who is now going to be the arbiter of opinions for the sheep?

  8. huh? says:

    Thanks for highlighting this Becky.
