AN “OH, MY GOD” MOMENT!
Posted on January 4th, 2013 10 commentsMAYBE HE
REALLY IS SMART?Some days, even I can be shocked. In looking several things up today, I found Gil Smart’s house on the county website.
Maybe I’m naive. Maybe I’m living in a parallel universe. Maybe, as a woman, I have been underpaid for years. Or maybe, remember that SNL skit where Eddie Murphy can’t get a loan and then he sees the banker handing bucket loads of cash to a white man, something sinister is going on.
You see, Smart lives in a McMansion! Wow! He paid $239,500 two years ago. How much does this man make?
I wonder how his salary compares to Cindy Stauffer’s salary? She has been an absolute workhorse for the Lancaster Newspapers for over 25 years. An absolute workhorse!
I need to ponder the implications of all of this. The remaining top five and two honorary worst (including Smart) will absolutely come tomorrow.
Today is Friday and perhaps you’d care to join me at Smart’s house for a bottle of the finest champagne?10 responses to “AN “OH, MY GOD” MOMENT!”

Notice his taxes are $188,800 and he paid $239,500. Can anyone explain why some homes are taxed at the sale price and some are not?
-
I noticed that too, Carol, and it makes no sense. If I ever saw a house that was worth $239,500 it’s Smart’s (I think he said somewhere he got a good deal on it) and it should be taxed at at least that much, seems to me.

My house is about the same size, but on a smaller lot. I also don’t have the pilars in the front, but everything else is a typical bi-level house. Mine didn’t cost nearly as much either.

I think Smart is an idiot as well but I do not think where or what he lives in matters. It does appear to be a nice house but I don’t find it to be over the top. Either way, you don’t know how he bought it: his salary, hers, smart (no pun intended) investing, a gift, inheritance, et cetera. I am a fan of what you do but personally I think this kind of story diminishes your credibility.
-
Talking, you are aware that in his first big “investigative” piece, all Smart did was reveal people’s salaries, aren’t you?
-
He is such a hypocrite. He always has been. He thinks he’s such a ‘champion of the little guy’ but he has never had any credibility. I remember growing up at Lancaster Newspapers, and every time I ran into him he was either A) a jerk B) completely aloof, or C) terribly arrogant. And sometimes a combination of all three.

Thank you, Amber! That sums it up quite nicely!

Did he reveal peoples’ homes and their pictures? Just curious. I think publishing his house is a bit weird, and perhaps jeopardizes his family’s safety (since so many people hate him), but perhaps I’m missing the point… forgive me.
-
Oh, for heaven’s sake, FWIW! I think you need to get out more! A picture of his house? Oh, no! Gee, I guess if someone really wanted to find out where he lived they could just check the white pages?

New homes are taxed at the sale price. Existing homes are taxed at the assessed value.
Sorry, but this is hardly a McMansion. It’s a bilevel with columns. And $240K is hardly an expensive home, especially if both spouses are working.
