    GIMME SHELTER!

I found the first two pictures below on a Facebook page from an album titled “First Friday in Lancaster City – 9-7-2012,” (click here). If the photographer would like credit please let me know and I will gladly add it.
The third picture is from the Lancaster City Police Mounted Unit Facebook page (click here).
There is very dangerous weather on the way. Please take shelter.

    1. Thanks to a Facebook friend for posting the first picture!

    2. Romeo and Juliet are nice and cozy in their duck house with spouting.I knew you’d worry about them, they’re nice and comfortable in the straw.

    3. I saw a total of six mounted police at First Friday, in two groups of three. They happened to be one block apart on Prince Street. Two of the horses are not a regular part of the City police (which are shown in the bottom picture).

The first two pictures show the same group of horses, the other three were all dark colored. The only gray horse in Lancaster is Duke, shown in the bottom picture; the other in the same group appeared to be a lighter color in person.

Which raises the obvious question: Does Lancaster now have six horses instead of four, or were two borrowed for the evening?

    4. Artie, I THINK I read somewhere (Lancaster Police FB page?) that they were having “guests” from a mounted team from another city.

    5. Okay, I’ll ask the obvious question here. Do the police department suspect an influx of drive-by pitch-forking by Amish rowdies? Or maybe descendents of the Susquehannock will canoe in to meet with the Great White Father because they want their tribal hunting grounds back (the former Armstrong site)? Or just maybe, GPS tracking alerts show some more of those stolen cows heading down Duke Street? Why the need for horses in a modern police department???

    6. barryinwinnipeg: because horses can maneuver quickly through traffic and alleys. Mounted police are far more intimidating than officers on foot when performing crowd control. It’s a matter of effectiveness in an urban environment.

    7. Many cities have First Friday types of events. What can I say? Lancaster seems to like a ‘police presence’ rather than an ‘arts presence.’ Having lived there for many years, I was honestly shocked at how ‘relaxed’ other cities were and how what they would call “acting out” in Lancaster would instead be a joyful noise in other places. Really very sad in my estimation. Law abiding citizens are tacitly intimidated and considered to have a need to be ‘controlled.’ Very sad indeed.

    8. What happened to Keith’s horse?

    9. Keith Sadler generally used to ride Duke. The horse was out for a few months because he had intestinal surgery, but is OK now (see pictures on this post). I’ve not seen Keith Sadler riding a horse at all during 2012.

    10. huh?: in all fairness, a different kind of crowd usually gathers around Penn Square, one that can get rather rowdy at times. First Fridays have been attracting more and more young adults – many from outside of the city – who seem to be much more interested in seeing and being seen than in actually participating in the arts events. Of course this can lead to conflicts between different groups of people.

The presence of mounted police during First Friday is becoming ever increasingly justified, especially in the area immediately adjacent to the downtown Lancaster hotel and convention center.

    11. OMG! Looking at some of those pictures on that FB page I was thinking about “the loop!” Is this the latest reincarnation?

    12. Lol… The loop
