    TRUSTING OR STUPID?

Marv Adams, editor of the Sunday News, has informed his readers previously that polls indicate Lancaster citizens want local news in the paper.   So what does brilliant Marv do?  Today his huge lead story is “Senate vote moves health bill forward.”  Excuse me?

Of course, this is an important story but it should not be the lead in the Sunday News.  The internet and Sunday morning talk shows are far more informative.  Marv, repeat to yourself, polls have shown Lancastrians want local news!

And don’t you love the slant in this headline (click here):

        Countians remain a trusting lot

Oh, aren’t these Lancaster folks just great?  Um….Marv, anyone who leaves their car unlocked in this day and age is stupid – not “trusting.”

And there is this piece of brilliant writing in the article:

Thefts from vehicles – usually unlocked – have risen since spring. And despite warnings from police, trusting locals continue to invite malfeasance by leaving cars unlocked, valuables in view, or both.

Malfeasance?  I thought theft was a crime?  According to Merriam-Webster the meaning of malfeasance is:

“wrongdoing or misconduct especially by a public official”

Where are your copy editors, Marv?

Then we have Marv’s column this week, “Fact or fiction?” and he says this (click here):

A reader passed this e-mail along and asked:
“WELL, can it be true??? WHY isn’t the media ALL over this if it is??? Could this be your Pulitzer???”

Note to emailer:  Marv will not be winning a Pulitzer!  Have you lost your mind?

The brilliant Marv warns us this week about emails with erroneous information!  Wow!  Who knew?  You mean I’m not getting a million dollars from a Nigerian businessman?   And this really impressed Robert Field of NewsLanc.com who gave Marv a wag of the tail (click here)!

Please!   I give Marv a command to “rollover and play dead!  Stay.  Good boy!”

Marv must be trying for that Pulitzer, though, because he ends this week’s editorial, “Cliffhanging” with this:

Otherwise, towns like Lancaster and Reading may discover that their goose is cooked like a Thanksgiving entree.

Can you say trite and stupid?  And this from a man who gave his readers writing lessons last week!  What world do you live in, Marv?  I have an idea:  Let’s all goose Marv!

Please check back tomorrow for Smart, cameras and the convention center – all brought to you – literally – by the Lancaster Newspapers.

    1. This comment came in under “MARV’S WORLD” just as I was publishing:

“I think the majority just don’t seem to give a sh***t about anything that goes on outside of their own shielded little worlds. Another percentage does nothing except walk around in a controlled manner with their heads up their a**. That which remain, either hide away or consider themselves too few in numbers to make a difference. So I guess you can probably reach a conclusion on my opinion regarding “trusting lot” or stupid. Where’s the common sense in Lancaster county ????”

My response: I think calling Lancastrians who don’t lock their cars – and some who leave valuables out in the open in their unlocked cars – “trusting” is nonsense. I’d be too embarassed to call the police in that situation and truthfully, I think the officer’s time can be better spent. Also, many insurance companies will not pay for anything stolen from a vehicle if the car is unlocked and/or there is no sign of forced entry. What the article should have said is: Lock your doors or suck it up and stop crying and don’t bother calling the police.

    2. In all fairness, I do have to say that I had my car broken into twice, while living in Lancaster City. My doors were locked, and they just broke the window, which ended up being a much bigger pain to get fixed than if they just would have just opened the door and stolen my stereo.

In full disclosure, these ‘malfeseances’ occurred 10 to 15 years ago.

Anyway, some do subscribe to the theory of just leaving them unlocked. Maybe things have changed.

    3. I do not lock my car. It costs $$ to fix the window they break and I have NOTHING in my car, and then to top it all off I have to clean up the glass. Let them look in the glove box – umbrella and gloves. Let them look in the console – nothing in there. It costs more money to replace the window than a $5 umbrella and a $2 pair of gloves. So I have to agree with Jim, let them steal the stereo – still a lot cheaper to replace than a window.
